Frequently asked questions!
Here as some questions that you might be asking yourself!
Q. How does "exterior wall coating" differ from normal exterior painting?
A. Many conventional exterior paints found in merchants shops claim to survive the yearly weather cycles for 10 or 15 years. This is generally only the case in lab testing conditions and onto brick and plywood backgrounds - not a comprehensive conclusion. Our exterior wall coating systems cater for a wide range of substrates and have 25 years + "proof of performance". A common sight for many wall coating crews are flaking and peeling exterior walls due to a inferior paint being used which, in many cases, has only been applied as little as 2 years prior!
Q. Is this wall coating just a glorified version of normal exterior painting?
A. NO! most definately not! Crews are experts in external plastering (rendering) and repair, mortar joint pointing techniques & careful matching and marrying of many different substrates - all things that normal decorators would shy away from.
Q. This all sounds very expensive... Would I be better off getting some masonry paint and "joe bloggs decorator" to carry out the work?
A. The old adage "you get what you pay for" really does apply here, although JETCO Wallcoatings are a small company and we are not nearly as expensive as you might think. Our materials are superior to many conventional alternatives, but, because we buy in bulk from dedicated trade supply manufacturers we benefit from a bulk discount that cannot be offered to the public. Furthermore, our labour cost is calculated by wall area, and not a running daily labour cost.
Q. So how much to do my house? Ball park figure?
A. This is a very grey area. A definitive answer can't be given without a thorough survey and inspection of the property by a qualified personnel. Again, the old adage - "Pay peanuts, get monkeys!".
Q. How do you apply the wall coating?
A. Wall coatings are applied by either brush, roller or spray equipment depending on the material is being used & the type of surface being treated. A rough "pebbledash / roughdash surface benefits from brush & roller application so the "nooks & crannies" can be reached, whereas large, smooth area's benefit from spray application. Some materials come "ready to apply" whereas others have to be mixed to a workable consistancy, again depending on the wall surface. Our wallcoatings are installed through a rigouros 11 stage process, which ensures that each & every stage of the job, from preperation to completion is carried out properly.
Q. How quickly can a house be rendered and coated?
A. Several different factors come into play, the most important being weather conditions. The only real hindrance to work progressing as planned is heavy rain. Using specialist materials, we can progress through contracts on schedule in either freezing, windy, light raining or hot conditions. Typically, to repair & coat a 3 bed semi would take 4-5 days. To render and coat would take approx 7 working days, with a break of at least 2 weeks between rendering and coating. This allows the render to fully dry and cure.
Q. Can I choose my own personal colour?
A. We have a standard 12 colour range and a large selection british standard and manufacturer tints colours to choose from. If we cannot find a suited colour from the charts you can provide us with a colour sample which we will process into a coating. A BS or RAL number will also tell us what colour is to be used. These numbers can be obtained from your local paint merchants with the mix / match facility in store.
Q. What kind of gaurantee or warranty do I get with the work?
A. All our work comes with a 10 year gaurantee against major defects occuring that are not resulting from outside tamper unless otherwise stated. We are confident to offer this long term cover to homeowners due to the durable nature of our systems. These systems, when installed correctly, will offer many years of maintenance free, worry free enjoyment. If for any reason the system fails within the gaurantee period, we will rectify the problem at no expense to the customer.
Q. Do I need scaffold and does your price include it?
A. Scaffold is only required for wallcoating when an elevation cannot be reached from ladders i.e above a conservatory or a garage. When rendering a property scaffold must be erected to all elevations requiring rendering. In any case, the cost of scaffold is seperate to our quotes. Independent scaffolding contractors provide quotations upon request including all necessary permits etc...
Q. Do I need a skip and does your price include it?
A. Depending on the size of the job and the amount of waste, a small skip may be required. These come at a typical hire cost of £75 - £200. In many cases, we use HIPPOWASTE, a company which provide waste collection & recycling services very similar to that of skip hire companies. A tough plastic bulk bag called "HIPPOBAG" acts as a flexible, cheap alternative to skip hire, at a typical cost of £70. The initial site survey will establish the need for waste collection, and the cost included.
